WP2 – The human dimension – user-groups, socio-economic and cultural setting

WP2 – Key Questions

  • Who are the resource user groups in the estuarine system?
  • Which fisheries livelihood options, linked to estuarine resources, are developed by local communities in the study areas?
  • What are the socio-cultural and socio-economic stressors to estuary ecosystems health? (i.e. trade, processing industries, local consumption, increase in number of people, as well as governance processes at different levels, affect historical pathways of resource use)
  • What are the characteristics and shortcomings of estuarine governing institutions and what are their governing capacity? (rules that exist, representation, participation, communication and interactions)

WP2 – Objectives

  • Examine the socio-economic, cultural and historical factors that are operational
  • Identify user-groups, socio-economic activities, cultural settings
  • Assess market values and non-market values associated with resource extraction from the estuaries
  • Assess existing governance strategies

  • Resource user groups
  • Baseline socio-economic characteristics
  • Socioeconomic and cultural stressors to the estuary ecosystem
  • Governance strategies on livelihoods (governance of fish and estuary resources, governance processes, policies and institutions)
  • Factors (emerging and contextual) that drive local communities decisions on resource use patterns (population increase, livelihood strategies available, health status – diseases and HIV/AIDS status etc)
  • Perceived impacts of resource use patterns on estuary resources
